Philippa Atkins runs three Jigsaw schools in Cardiff & Penarth and has written ‘Skye & Luna’ – a beautifully created children’s picture book that tells the story of baby loss through a child’s eyes, based on her own personal experience.
A bit about the book and why it matters…
Skye was so looking forward to meeting her baby sister, Luna. She was so excited to be a big sister. But when she woke up the next morning, Luna was no longer there.
Baby loss is a deeply painful reality, yet it remains under-discussed, especially when it comes to other children in the family. Finding the right words to explain such a loss can feel impossible, leaving families struggling to talk to each other.
Baby loss is still heartbreakingly common, and without open conversations, families can feel isolated in their grief. Too often, the memories of these little ones fade – not because they are forgotten, but because there aren’t enough ways to honour them and keep their light shining.
This is why ‘Skye & Luna’ is so important.

This beautifully created children’s picture book tells the story of baby loss through a child’s eyes, based on Luna’s Mum’s personal experience. It offers families a way to navigate these tender conversations with love and understanding.
A book to be shared together available in English and Welsh.
Written by Phillipa Atkins, Mum to Luna who died aged just three days old, who vowed to always allow Luna’s light to shine brightly. This is Skye, Luna & Arla’s story told through Skye’s eyes which is incredibly moving and uplifting.
Phillipa’s words are brought to life by the stunning illustrations by Emma S Jones who captures the emotion and beauty so perfectly.
As a phenomenon, baby loss is hugely under-discussed, especially with children within the family. It’s tough to find appropriate language and terminology to express the experience of a family at this time. This has to change as baby loss is still commonplace in our society.
The memories of these babies can get buried due to an inability to find and express ways to remember them and keep their lights shining.
Not only does this stifle people’s ability to grieve and grow, but also means that experiences are not shared and practices improved as a result.
This book helps to honour those babies. May their memories shine!
