Myles stars in Macbeth!

WOW! We have some very exciting news to share with you all. Our wonderful Jigsaw Watford student Myles is currently starring in ‘The Tragedy of Macbeth’ at The Ameida Theatre, London. He stars alongside Oliver Award-nominee James McArdle and Four-time Academy Award-nominated Saoirse Ronan.

Myles is certainly no stranger to the West End stage. He made his Debut in the smash hit show  “TINA – The Tina Turner Musical” and he has many TV commercials and filming experiences under his belt.

Myles Grant

We caught up with Myles to find out about his experience from the audition day right through to press night!

What was the audition process like for Macbeth?

The audition process was pretty intense. I had to bring my A game especially as I was auditioning against hundreds of other actors.

How did you feel when you heard you had been given the role?

When I heard I had landed my role in Macbeth, I think the word to describe my feeling was ecstatic. My mum, dad and I celebrated for a whole week.

Tell us a little about your role?

Macduff’s Brother – come & see the play and you’ll be impressed! It’s jaw dropping!

What has been your best moment so far?

Meeting the other great actors, artists and creators involved in the play. It felt like one big, gigantic family.

How has Jigsaw helped you in preparing for your role?

Jigsaw has helped me to explore my emotions, expand my imagination and has helped in different ways to encourage my confidence and character.

How do you balance being a child actor alongside school work?

I balance performing and school by prioritising my education as number one. Everything is secondary as I’m always reminded that you have to have a plan B if acting doesn’t work out.

What is it like working with such a great cast?

Working with such a professional cast around me has not only inspired me to improve my craft but to always be on point. Being around such great people has made me a better actor.

Describe the feeling of being on stage in 3 words

Joyful, Emotional, Adventurous

What are your favourite musicals/plays and what would be your dream role?

One of my all time favourite musicals and one I would dream of being in would be The Lion King. It redefines the meaning of magic on stage. My next favourite musical has to be The School of Rock and again I would love to land a role in it one day.

Myles also wanted to add…  “I want to thank Jigsaw for giving me the opportunity to express myself and as it has helped open many doors both to myself and many other budding children’s actors”

Thank you Myles! To book your tickets to see Macbeth (Be quick – they’re selling out!) just head to www.almeida.co.uk

Miss Saigon West End review

Miss Saigon has made its highly anticipated return to the West End and is already taking the theatre world by storm. This gut-wrenching musical tells the story of a young girl called Kim who falls in love with Chris, an American GI. This all takes place during the fall of Saigon and we see their lives end in complete devastation as their relationship is ripped apart, twist after twist.

As a 14 year old eager performing arts student with a huge passion for musicals, I was more than excited when my Mum took myself and my friend Laura to see this show at The Birmingham Hippodrome back in 2003. We already knew all the songs off by heart, although admittedly I didn’t really understand the full extent of the story-line. Of course it further cemented our love for musicals so when Miss Saigon was announced to make a return to the West End 11 years later, with an added song and a few changes to the lyrics, the inevitable happened. Once again, Laura and I would be reliving the Saigon experience and my count down until show night began.

This show was purely exhausting and I felt as though I left the theatre with a torn-out heart and empty pit at the bottom of my stomach, but I enjoyed every minute. Strange paradox I know. I was incredibly impressed with all of the performances in the show as it was so beautifully acted, choreographed and directed. Flawless in every sense. Even the lighting deserved a standing ovation, which is something I don’t usually pay much attention to. Highlights for me included the character John singing “Bui Doi” with a real gospel quality to it which is completely different from whenever I’ve heard it sung before. 18 year old ‘Eva Noblezada’ playing Kim was absolutely breathtaking. As an audience member I truly felt she meant every word and every line she sang, with such a mature sincerity and a real maternal feel to her character in the scenes with her young on-stage son Tam. She certainly is an incredible talent.

The only part I missed from the original production was the duet “Now That I’ve Seen Her” which is sung by the characters Kim and Ellen who are both in love with Chris and come face to face for the first time. However, this has been replaced with a very intense solo sung by Ellen called “Maybe” and in this much more gritty rendition of the show I have to admit it fits perfectly.

I absolutely award Miss Saigon with 5 stars as it completely exceeded my expectations. It’s a difficult one to put into words just how much I felt affected by this show and I don’t doubt for a moment that the majority of the audience felt the same. It received an overwhelming standing ovation, and with such a lot to take in throughout one show, I can’t wait to have the opportunity to go and see it all over again!

Meet Rachel, the Manager and Franchisee of Jigsaw Harlow

Famous for its major collection of public sculptures the town of Harlow, West Essex has a thriving arts community and history. But with Jigsaw Harlow soon to open its doors for the very first time with Manager Rachel!

Offering dance, singing and drama classes on Sunday mornings for children aged 3-18, the school’s manager and franchisee Rachel is excited to be putting Harlow on the Jigsaw map.

With the dawn of the New Year fast approaching, we discuss her inspiration and the important role the performing arts plays in building confidence and creating a place to belong.

What sparked your interest in the Performing Arts?

When I was little, I absolutely loved pop bands and had such an interest in music, but I was quite a shy child. I remember being taken to my first West End show and from that moment on I wanted to perform. I started taking part in shows at school, started singing lessons and joined a youth theatre which was an invaluable time in my childhood as it gave me some fantastic opportunities and really built up my confidence, leading me to train and work professionally in the performing arts industry.

What was it that drew you to Jigsaw?

When I discovered Jigsaw, I was working as a performer and I wanted to do something more meaningful with my time. As soon as I came out of my Jigsaw interview, I knew I needed to get the job. Jigsaw’s main aim is to ensure that all children find a place to belong and be creative and that I believe is so important, particularly with performing arts being reduced in the school environment. Five years on and I’m realising my dream of opening my own performing arts school with Jigsaw. I wouldn’t dream of doing this with anyone else!

Singing, Dancing or Drama? Which is your favourite?

That is a tough question as I have taught all three for Jigsaw over the last 5 years! I think I would have to say singing as I think there is no better feeling than creating an amazing sound in a group!

What will your Jigsaw school bring to your area?

Jigsaw Harlow is going to bring creativity, lots of spark, a place to make friends and build confidence and somewhere to unleash imagination!

What do you hope to inspire in the young people who will attend your school?

I hope that the students that attend Jigsaw Harlow feel inspired to grow in confidence and to use their imagination and creativity. My aim is for the students of Jigsaw Harlow to grow up with the same happy memories of taking part in performing arts as I have!

Jigsaw Harlow opens for the Spring term on the 27th of January 2019 offering dance, singing and drama classes for children aged 3-18. To book your child’s place or to make an enquiry you can call Rachel on 01279 293 088 or email ha****@ji*********.ukRead more about Jigsaw Harlow here.

Meet Natalie, Hemel Hempstead

What sparked your interest in the performing arts?

I was exposed to the performing arts from a young age as my parents are keen theatre goers. I would love the whole experience of being in a theatre and the excitement as the house lights came down and you would be transported into a new world. I spent my childhood as a member of my local dance school and it remains one of my greatest memories.

What drew you to Jigsaw Natalie?

I had just finished drama school when I came across Jigsaw and the whole ethos of the school really spoke to me. I loved the fact that this was more than just a performing arts school, it is somewhere for children to belong and to grow in confidence. As a shy child myself I know first hand how transformative the performing arts can be.

Singing, dance, drama what’s your favourite?

Drama would have to be my favourite, followed closely by dance.

What will your Jigsaw school bring to Hemel Hempstead?

I would like Jigsaw to bring sense of community and fun. It’s important to me that we help to create amazing memories and experiences that will last a life time for the students.

How does it feel owning & running Jigsaw Hemel Hempstead and what can we expect in the future?

It feels surreal to own my own Jigsaw, but also incredibly empowering and exciting! I hope we can expect to see a busy school full of happy students who are having a brilliant time performing and learning new skills.

What do you hope to inspire in the young people who attend the school?

To always believe in themselves, to be brave in following their dreams whatever they may be and to carry a love for the performing arts always.

Jigsaw Hemel Hempstead is launching with Natalie at the Adeyfield Academy.  New students are invited to do a two week trial before signing up for the whole term.

A hairbrush in hand….pretending to be a superstar… Meet Megan!

Megan is the new owner of Jigsaw Performing Arts School in Ilford. She is buzzing with energy and excitement and ready to bring lots of fun to the performing arts classes in Ilford on Saturday afternoons. We wanted to find out what sparked her interest in performing arts and her journey so far….

“I always wanted to perform”

As a young girl I always wanted to perform and be the centre of attention.  At a young age my parents would often find me with a hairbrush in hand, a costume and sunglasses on dancing around my bedroom pretending to be a superstar.  It was from this that my parents could see I clearly had a love for the performing arts so signed me up to classes in all disciplines. My love for the performing arts grew from there and after my completing my GCSEs I made the decision that I wanted to do a BTEC in performing arts and then go on to one of the top drama schools in London to study to be an actress.

It wasn’t until I had completed my degree that I decided that I wanted to be a teacher and I wanted to teach young people my subject that I am so passionate about.  It was a hard choice but I decided to be a secondary school teacher specialising in Drama.

I wouldn’t say that drama is my favourite out of the three disciplines, I love them all equally like they are my own children!  After a couple of years teaching full time in education, I wanted to get back to where my teaching career started, in performing arts weekend schools.

The steps to owning my own school.

It was from this that I found the wonder that is Jigsaw Arts.  I saw an advert on their website for a weekend performing arts teacher and was lucky enough to be asked for an interview.  Here I met Nicola and it was from that moment that I knew that at some point in my future I would own my very own Jigsaw Arts school – and here I am! Although I never imagined that I would be taking on a school during a worldwide pandemic.

To now be owning my own Jigsaw Arts school feels strange. I think it’s still settling in that I am actually the owner of the school and I’m not employed to run it. I’m so excited for the Autumn Term to start and I cannot wait to welcome everyone back to Jigsaw Ilford. I have big plans for my Jigsaw journey and I hope that one day I will own my own Jigsaw Empire! Watch this space!

So, what will I bring to Jigsaw Arts Ilford?

Well, I’ll bring my energetic enthusiasm for the performing arts, my love of the theatre and my bubbly and friendly personality. I’ll also be bringing an amazing team of teachers with me. I want to build the students’ confidence and just see them enjoying the arts and having the best time. I hope that my team and I will inspire our young people to be confident and use their imaginations and creativity in all walks of life.

If you’d like to join Megan for some inspiring performing arts classes, you can contact her on 020 3733 2314 or email ilford@jigsaw-arts.co.ukJigsaw Ilford takes place at The Ursuline Academy on Saturday afternoons and the new term starts on 26th September.

Meet Jigsaw Franchisee Emily

Emily, Owner and Manager of Jigsaw Balham!

We spoke to Emily about her Jigsaw Journey:

“Fast forward to 2021 and the opportunity arose to purchase Jigsaw Balham as my very own franchise, to say I was excited was an understatement, to say I felt like I didn’t know what I was doing was an even bigger one! The team were fabulous at supporting me to set the business up, take over and continue the smooth running of the school.

Despite taking over a month before Covid lockdown restrictions came into place, signing that piece of paper was the best work choice I have ever made.

Moving forward into 2023, I am a new mum, juggling work, life and a small human being. My franchise support manager, along with the rest of the head office team, have been wonderful at keeping in touch and providing help when the sleepless nights have made me forgotten how to do something technical on the website.

The Jigsaw network has always felt like a family and it is a family I am very proud to be a part of. Whenever I meet with the head office team or another franchisee, there is always a bright, positive and exciting energy.

Everyone invested in the brand is invested in the ethos of making Jigsaw a place to belong, not only for the children and their families, but also the staff and people involved behind the scenes.

I would 100% invest in a Jigsaw franchise if I had my time again. Buying into a well established brand that is recognised and trusted puts you 10 steps ahead of everyone else before you even start. The guidance and support to grow the business is brilliant and tailored to suit you at any given moment in your life.

Having a baby has sure made me take a slight step back in order to learn how to be a mum, but I have more drive than ever to make this work for my family and I certainly cannot wait to continue to grow my business!”

Meet Imogen, our newest Franchisee at Jigsaw Teddington

What sparked your interest in the performing arts?

As a child I absolutely adored Oliver Twist and Annie was my idol. I’d have loved to jump into the screen to sing and dance with Mary Poppins and would have traded my right arm to fly in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang! I knew almost every word to those films and my mum still tells the story of my daily ritual at nursery, of standing on a chair every morning to sing ‘The sun will come out tomorrow’!

What was it that drew you to Jigsaw?

When I was about 10 years old, Jigsaw Arts opened in my primary school, just around the corner from my house – and I couldn’t have been more delighted! The founder of Jigsaw, Nicola Lander, was my teacher and going to Jigsaw the best part of my week. I have been part of the Jigsaw Family ever since! I spent almost every Saturday afternoon of my childhood at Jigsaw and when I was old enough, I graduated to the Jigsaw Youth Theatre. I have so many amazing memories of the shows that we performed in theatres throughout London and I made so many lifelong Jigsaw friends along the way.

As soon as I could, I began assisting in the Performing Arts classes at Jigsaw and slowly worked my way through administrative roles in the Jigsaw head office, teaching my own classes at various Jigsaw Arts schools and most recently managing two Jigsaw Arts Schools in North London. I took time out in between this amazing journey and worked as a teacher in Russia for 6 years, but, as soon as I returned to London, I knew Jigsaw was the best place to be.

Jigsaw Arts shaped my life and gave me the confidence to travel the world and follow my dreams. Opening a Franchise in my home town of Teddington just feels like the absolute right thing for me to do, now that I have gained so much knowledge and hands on experience. I feel so lucky to have had my personal journey with Jigsaw and now that I have my own young child, I appreciate the benefits that this performing arts school offers.

I cannot wait to share the joy and brilliance of Jigsaw with the parents and young people in my local area. I am also looking forward to when my son turns 3 so he can benefit too.

Singing, Dancing or Drama? Which is your favourite?

That is too difficult a question for me to answer – Ever since my nursery days I have just loved a great show!

What do you hope to inspire in the young people who will attend your school?

There are so many ways that children can be inspired by Jigsaw. Hmm, another difficult question! I think that inspiring confidence and self-belief in children are the most important for me. There are very few things that I can think of, that are more rewarding than inspiring young people to strive for their own personal goals and seeing their confidence and self-belief grow. And on top of it all, seeing the parent’s pride in their children is an amazing bonus too!

Jigsaw Performing Arts is dedicated to developing performance skills, promoting self-expression and building confidence. Jigsaw Teddington opens for the Spring term on the 26th of January 2019, offering dance, singing and drama classes for children aged 3-18. To book your child’s place or to make an enquiry you can call Imogen on 020 3633 6457 or email te********@ji*********.ukRead more about Jigsaw Teddington here.

London’s Best Musicals This Summer

In summer, London is turned into the city of rooftop restaurants and boat parties, but whilst the capital’s various attractions and museums offer some of the best exhibitions and activities, it is safe to say that nothing can beat a night out to go and watch a musical in one of London’s famous theatres.

In no particular order, here are three must-see shows which have taken the world of musical theatre by a storm; and the good news is that you and your family can enjoy them this summer!

The Lion King

If you are looking for night filled with uplifting adventure, The Lion King is the musical for you and all your family this summer. Now entering its seventeenth year at The Lyceum Theatre, this show has continued to amaze children and adults alike. With the use of magnificent costumes and breathtaking special effects, The Lion King tells the story of Simba, a young lion cub who, after the death of his father Mufassa by his evil uncle Scar, learns about life on his journey to becoming King of the pride.

The musical is a mixture of near plotlines to Hamlet whilst also combining with comedy and messages of friendship and unity to make the Lion King a West Endphenomenon and undoubtedly the King of London Musicals for years to come.

Stomp

If you want to see something original that will most definitely get you out of our chair and dancing to a new beat, then STOMP is the show for you. From paint cans to dustbin lids, shopping trolleys to the kitchen sink, STOMP allows the audience to experience theatre in a whole new light with a combination of music, rhythms and comedy to make a range of day-to-day objects come to life. Critics say “It’s the event that showed the globe that even the most ordinary objects can do extraordinary things – in the right hands” and has been running in the Ambassador’s Theatrefor a staggering 25 years.

STOMP is the perfect show: thrilling, hilarious and impressively powerful for all the family and will have your toes tapping and fingers clicking in no time.

Aladdin

Are magic carpets, lamps and genies more to your taste? Prepare to be amazed by the mind-blowing special effects, visuals and hundreds of beautiful costumes which bring the Disney classic Aladdin to life on London’s stage at the Prince Edward Theatre this summer. Suitable for all the family, allow yourself to be swept off your feet as the cast and crew take you to Agrabah to embark on a journey with Disney’s beloved characters of Aladdin, Genie and Jasmine with songs from the Disney original.

Reviewed as “theatrical magic”, do not miss this colourful, comical and splendid experience that is Aladdin, and will undoubtedly make you and your family discover “A Whole New World”.

Performing Arts Summer Schools

How about actually starring in a show containing drama, singing and dance? Alongside weekend performing arts classes for children, Jigsaw also runs week-long summer schools during the school summer holidays for children aged 3-16.

Students are put into age groups where they will participate in singing, dance and drama classes. Throughout the week, a show is put together with costumes, lighting and sound to create a unique and enjoyable theatrical experience for all the family.

Take a look at www.jigsaw-arts.co.uk/summer-schools  for more information and to book your child’s place at one of our schools.

Learning Perseverance

Learning perseverance! Malcolm Gladwell’s concept of “10,000 hours” has firmly entered popular culture since his book Outliers was published in 2008. The idea is that perseverance and practice can make someone great at something. This can count as much as, if not more than, what someone is born with.

Whether these hours can be counted exactly, and what the roles of natural ability and practice are precisely, are still up for debate. But it’s a nice powerful number and an important corrective.

We love the story of an overnight, instant success. Often, however, that’s just what it is – a story. Less exciting, but more realistic, is all the hard work that goes into becoming an “overnight success”.

“Actually, I’m an overnight success, but it took twenty years.” – Monty Hall

One of the classic examples is Edison and his team testing over 3,000 designs for the light bulb. Then there’s Harrison Ford, working as a carpenter when he was cast as Han Solo in Star Wars. Or JK Rowling, whose manuscript for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was rejected many times.

We can do a a great disservice to children by creating role models and sharing narratives that only embody the idea of instant success. It can set children up for disappointment and fail to convey the importance of perseverance.

This is why children need to be challenged in life and to learn to challenge themselves, to develop their own goals and work towards them.

Unfortunately, the education system is often limited by the need to standardise and treat every child the same. Everyone needs to study the same subjects in the same way, and everyone has to take the same tests.

“Great works are performed not by strength but by perseverance.” – Samuel Johnson

Children who consistently struggle in the same area can miss out on that vital sense of progression. They aren’t shown those steps in between to get them from where they are to where they want to be. They might grow frustrated and give up, having not seen a clear path to success and not learned the value of perseverance.

On the other hand, children who find those same tasks easy without working hard can then struggle in other areas, or in the outside world later in life. They haven’t been challenged, so they haven’t developed the mindset and skills necessary for persevering, for working hard to accomplish something that doesn’t come easily to them.

This is why it’s all the more important to give children activities outside of school through which they can learn the value of perseverance. Every child is different, every child will learn in different ways and every child needs individual goals that will challenge them.

We’ve written before about the many benefits of dramasinging and dance. Another underrated benefit of the performing arts is that – with the right encouraging teacher who recognises children’s individual needs – they teach the value of perseverance.

Whether it’s working hard on a scene of dialogue, a song, or a dance routine, children can see their own improvement over the course of weeks, and that’s incredibly valuable.
