Mental and Physical Well-Being: Why Drama is Great for Kids!

Why Drama is Great for Your Child’s Mental and Physical Well-Being at Jigsaw Performing Arts Harpenden!

At Jigsaw Performing Arts Harpenden, we believe in the transformative power of drama for children’s mental and physical well-being. Drama is much more than just acting, it’s an immersive experience that nurtures creativity, boosts confidence, and helps children grow both emotionally and physically. Here’s why drama is an excellent choice for your child’s development…

Improves Mental Well-Being

Drama is a wonderful way for children to express their emotions and explore different perspectives. Through role-playing, storytelling, and improvisation, kids can safely explore various scenarios and characters, helping them build empathy and emotional intelligence. This allows them to understand and manage their own feelings while learning how to connect with others. Drama also encourages children to step out of their comfort zone, reducing anxiety and fostering a sense of achievement and self-worth.

The collaborative nature of drama builds a sense of community. Children work together to create scenes and performances, which strengthens their teamwork and communication skills. This sense of belonging and shared purpose is a powerful way to support mental health, helping kids feel supported and understood by their peers and mentors.

Physical Health Benefits

Drama is not just about words, it’s about movement too. Many drama exercises involve physical activity, such as using body language, facial expressions, and spatial awareness. These activities help children develop coordination, balance, and motor skills. Performing on stage requires focus and discipline, helping children improve their posture and physical awareness.

The physicality of drama also aids in relieving stress. The expressive movement involved in acting can help children release pent-up energy, reduce tension, and relax their minds. When children act, they learn to inhabit their bodies in new ways, gaining confidence in both their physical and emotional presence.

The Jigsaw Experience

At Jigsaw Performing Arts Harpenden, our drama classes are designed to provide a safe and supportive environment for children to explore the world of performance. Through creative play, role-taking, and performances, children develop key life skills and a deeper understanding of themselves.

Drama at Jigsaw isn’t just about acting, it’s about growing, learning, and thriving. Let your child discover the joys of drama while enhancing their mental and physical well-being.

From Jigsaw Barnet to the West End: Mia Rogers is Matilda! We’re bursting with pride here at Jigsaw Barnet as we celebrate an incredible milestone. Our very own Mia Rogers has landed the title role in Matilda the Musical!

Mia, who attends Jigsaw Barnet on Saturday afternoons in East Barnet, has always shown an extraordinary passion for performing. Week after week, Megan and the team watched Mia grow not just as a performer, but as a confident, creative, and determined young person.

Jigsaw Bexleyheath is a place to belong for Gabriella!

At Jigsaw Bexleyheath we love watching our students grow and mature over the years. From their first day in the 3-4 and 5-6 classes to when they turn 18 and head out into the world. We have so many students who have been with us for 10+ who are now moving on whether it be on to further education or in to the work force and so over the next few months we will be interviewing them to see how Jigsaw has helped them to prepare for the next stage of their lives!

First up we have Gabriella who I interviewed on her last day at Jigsaw at the end of our Spring term;

How old are you?

I’m 16 years old.

How long have you been coming to Jigsaw?

I’ve been coming to Jigsaw Bexleyheath for the past 10 years!

What’s your favourite thing about Jigsaw?

I love the community and how we are all able to thrive off of each other. I find it’s a great space to explore all aspects of the performing arts and everything I love.

How has Jigsaw helped you?

It’s definitely helped me with confidence I am able to be much more outspoken and since I’ve been coming for so long I’m able to take that in to aspects of my school work and use the skills I’ve learned in real world senarios.

What are you going to miss about Jigsaw?

The people! I really love the staff, they’re like family and also my friends I’m going to miss them so so much! But most importantly I’m going to miss the 3 hours that I spend on Sundays at Jigsaw.

What’s next for you?

Once I’ve finished my A levels I will be going to a university in New York, USA where I will be training in film and theatre which I am really excited about and feel like Jigsaw has really helped me to prepare for that!

Easter Camp Aladdin Magic at Jigsaw Barnet!

What an unforgettable week we had at our Easter Camp, Aladdin themed, at Jigsaw Barnet! The energy was electric the moment our young performers stepped into the magical world of Agrabah.

Throughout the week, students took part in dance, singing, acting, and laughed their way through a whirlwind of workshops inspired by the classic tale of Aladdin. From high-energy choreography to powerful musical numbers (and a few genie giggles along the way), our talented campers brought the story to life with creativity and confidence.

The Easter Camp Aladdin extravaganza ended with a fantastic showcase for family and friends — and let’s just say, it was nothing short of a standing ovation moment! We were so proud to see every student shine on stage, many of them trying something new and absolutely smashing it.

Easter Camp went down an absolute treat, and we’re already counting down the days to our Summer Camp! Expect even more fun, creativity, and unforgettable memories.

Well done to all our brilliant students that attended the Easter Camp Aladdin fun — we will hopefully see you in the summer!

Inspiring Students Through Performing Arts at Jigsaw Hendon

As performing arts teachers, our mission goes beyond just teaching dance, singing, and drama. We strive to inspire our students, helping them build confidence and unlock their full potential through creative expression. One of the most rewarding parts of our role is watching young minds grow in their love for the performing arts. And seeing them thrive as they develop new skills at Jigsaw Hendon!
Every lesson is an opportunity to nurture creativity, challenge boundaries, and encourage self-expression. We guide our students at Jigsaw Hendon through a mix of fun and engaging activities. Exploring the many facets of performing arts. It could be learning a new dance routine, practicing vocal techniques, or delving into character development, each class is designed to help build their technical skills and confidence too.
One of the most exciting ways we inspire our students is by taking them on experiences that showcase the magic of the performing arts. We took our students to see Wicked in London’s West End. A thrilling experience that left a lasting impact on everyone! Watching a professional production up close helps our students see what’s possible when passion, talent, and hard work come together. It also motivates them to keep pushing themselves, both in the classroom and beyond.
The students were absolutely mesmerised by the powerful singing, intricate choreography, and emotional drama. The show was a perfect example of how the performing arts can move people, and it reminded our students that they, too, have the ability to create something just as magical.
For us, it’s not just about teaching to perform—it’s about showing our students that they can be anything they dream to be. Through dance, drama, and music, we help them build the confidence to shine in everything they do.

Jigsaw Arts Bushey Students Shine with Wicked Inspiration

On March 27th, our Group 3 (eldest students at Jigsaw Arts Bushey) had the unforgettable opportunity to see Wicked in London’s West End. The stunning performance, filled with captivating songs, intricate choreography, and powerful storytelling, left everyone inspired and excited to bring a bit of the magic back to class. Just days later, on March 30th, the students, feeling inspired from the show, performed their own material based on Wicked, in Singing and Dance during their class presentations.

The experience of seeing Wicked in person was truly transformative for our students. From the electrifying opening number to the show-stopping finale, the performance ignited their creativity and gave them a fresh perspective on musical theatre. The powerful songs, like Defying Gravity and Dancing through life, inspired them to explore themes of strength, friendship, and self-expression in their own work.

Back in class at Jigsaw Bushey, the excitement was contagious as the students channelled their love for Wicked into their class material that they had been working on with their teachers during the term. They worked together to recreate the story in their performances while building their confidence. It was amazing to see how they applied what they’d learned from Wicked—incorporating powerful vocals, dynamic dance moves, and emotional storytelling into their performance.

Their class presentation on March 30th was nothing short of spectacular. The students delivered a performance full of energy, emotion, and creativity, capturing the essence of Wicked while showcasing their own unique talents. It was a proud moment for both the students and teachers at Jigsaw Bushey, as we saw them grow not only in their performing arts skills but in their confidence and ability to work as a team.

This experience was a perfect reminder of how the performing arts can inspire, empower, and encourage students to dream big and reach for the stars!

Little Performers Take to the Limelight at Jigsaw Harpenden!

Last month, our little performers aged 3 to 6 took the limelight at Jigsaw Harpenden and truly shone during their class presentations. It was a magical moment. Our little stars showcased the confidence, creativity, and joy they’ve been building in our performing arts classes.

Our youngest performers have been exploring dance, singing, and drama in a fun and supportive environment. The goal at Jigsaw Harpenden isn’t just to teach the basics of performing arts. It’s about giving the tools to build confidence, and feel proud of achievements. The presentations were a perfect culmination of all their hard work!

Excitement filled the room as parents entered and took their seats. Each presentation was filled with fun and energy. As the children sang catchy tunes, performed adorable dance routines, and even acted their socks off in their fabulous poems. Their natural joy and excitement for performing was evident, and it was clear that they had gained so much confidence throughout the process.

For our little performers, being part of a class presentation was about more than just the class demonstration itself. It was a journey of self-expression and personal growth. Through dance, singing, and drama, they learned how to work together as a team, overcome stage fright, and celebrate their unique talents. Parents, teachers, and fellow students couldn’t help but smile as they watched. Embracing the world of performing arts with such joy and enthusiasm.

We couldn’t be prouder! The Spring Term presentations were just the beginning of their journey in the performing arts, and we can’t wait to see how they continue to grow in confidence and creativity.

Drama classes at Jigsaw Stevenage with Tommy!

Drama at Jigsaw Stevenage, with classes taught by the enthusiastic and talented Tommy from Jigsaw Stevenage!

What do you enjoy most about teaching Drama at Jigsaw Stevenage?

I currently teach Drama at Jigsaw Stevenage and am enjoying every moment of it! I love giving my students the power to create and expand on their own knowledge through devising and collaboration. I always begin my lessons with a ‘Check in’ where my students get to answer questions such as “Describe your week in 3 words”, “What is your favourite musical at the moment?” or “Give me your best joke”. These talking points always spark conversation and a strong sense of community within the classroom. Besides skill, successful actors are the ones who always look after their fellow cast mates. If they want to be No.1 on the call sheet, it starts with these very actions of teamwork and kindness. I enjoy these conversations the most as they usually end up in laughter. Once ‘Check in’ is closed, we then head into devising and expand our skills further. I enjoy sharing my knowledge and watching my students grow.

What do you do when not at Jigsaw Stevenage?

I currently train at Emil Dale Academy on their prestigious Ba(Hons) Musical Theatre degree. I train from 8am till 5 pm in areas such as; acting through song; physical acting; acting; ballet; tap; jazz; commercial; contemporary; voice; ensemble singing; and much more. This wide range of training allows me to not only teach aspiring performers, but to also take varying avenues into the industry. For example, outside of training, I am currently expanding on my knowledge of music by writing my own songs and accompanying them on guitar. You will often find me in local open mic nights and festivals performing. More obviously, when out of training you will find me in many amateur musical theatre shows. Last year I performed in productions of Les Misérables at Grantham Guildhall Arts Centre and of Evita at the Newark Palace Theatre. I also intend to perform a production of Guys and Dolls this Summer.

Favourite TV show to watch?

This has in fact been a very popular ‘check in’ question throughout my time teaching at Jigsaw and I am yet to give a strong definitive answer. It is safe to say I am not an avid ‘rewatcher’ of TV programmes on repeat, because my list of shows I need to watch is extensive! Therefore, everything I watch is great television. I am a big fan of any action thriller series such as; Jack Reacher, on Prime Video; Night Action, on Netflix; or Jack Ryan, on Prime Video. The list could go on. Contrastingly, I enjoy TV shows which can make me laugh such as; Last One Laughing, on Prime Video; or Would I Lie to You? On BBC One. These are Hilarious watches!

If there was a film based on your life, who would play you?

If there was a film based on my whole life, including what’s yet to come, there would probably be 3 actors cast. One for little me, one for me now and one for older me. If I could cast Little me now, I would probably pickJacob Tremblay, who played Auggie in Wonder, on Netflix. I really like the idea of filming the ‘me now’ section of my life as myself just after it happens and then having to wait years to film the end of my life. I would love for Rod Stewart to play ‘older me’ but I fear once older me has lived Rod Stewart would have to be around 150 years old which is highly unlikely!

Who is your Favourite Actor?

I really enjoy watching Tom Hardy tackle roles such as the Kray twins in the film Legend on Netflix; and Venom in the film Venom, on Disney+. These films are both action movies which include his characters being notoriously funny. Tom Hardy has a great way of connecting deep emotions with a character’s humour and I envy that as an actor. It is one thing to be able to do either separately but together… It is simply astounding.

What is your favourite Musical Theatre song?

I love watching a good heart throb musical theatre song. Two that come to mind straight away are; ‘With You’ from Ghost the Musical and ‘These are my Children’ from Fame. Watching these actors go through an emotional journey on stage is mesmerising, I would definitely recommend.

Which show would you most like to perform in?

I would LOVE to perform in Les Misérables on the west end. From Javert to Thenardier to the incredible ensemble. Anything Les Misérables, I’m in! Javert’s story is captivating as he struggles between his own morals and his duty to God. He may seem stern, but deep down he is a mess. Similarly, I would love to play the comedic relief of the play, Thenardier, who is a drunkard thief alongside his wife Madame Thenardier. Their song, Master of the House, is an actor’s playground with strong satire and a reflection on modern society. Lastly, Les Misérables has so many amazing ensemble numbers. From ‘Do you hear the people sing’ to ‘One Day More’ to ‘Drink with me’. I wish I could be in it all!
