Why consistency builds confidence in young children

As parents, we all want to give our children the best possible start. Not in a pressured or pushy way, but in a steady, thoughtful way that helps them feel secure, capable and happy in themselves.

One of the most powerful ways to support this is through consistency.

In a world that can feel busy and unpredictable, a regular weekly activity gives children something incredibly valuable. Routine. Familiar faces. A place where they know what to expect.

At Jigsaw Performing Arts Ilford, we see first-hand how committing to a consistent activity can gently transform a child’s confidence over time.

Why consistency matters for young children

Children aged 3 to 6 thrive on routine. In fact, routine is great for children of all ages.  Some of our older students in the 7 – 18 years classes have been attending Jigsaw for over 5 years. When students attend the same class each week, something special begins to happen.

They:

  • Recognise the structure
  • Build trust with their teachers
  • Form real friendships
  • Feel more secure in the environment
  • Become braver in trying new things

Confidence is not built in one big moment. It grows in small, repeated steps.  That is the power of commitment.

Confidence comes from belonging

We often speak to parents who worry:

“Will my child cope?”
“They’re quite shy.”
“I just want them to enjoy it.”

These are such normal concerns.

The truth is, confidence does not come from being the loudest in the room. It comes from feeling safe enough to be you.

When children return to the same class each week, they begin to feel this is where I belong.  And belonging builds confidence naturally.

The difference between trying and committing

It can be tempting to dip in and out of activities or switch frequently when something feels new or slightly uncomfortable. It is natural for children to be nervous on the first week.  But real growth often happens just beyond those early nerves.

By committing to a term, children learn:

  • Perseverance
  • Patience
  • Responsibility
  • The reward of progress

They see their own improvement week by week. Not because they were pushed but because they were consistent.

How performing arts supports long-term confidence

Our Saturday classes at Ilford are designed specifically to nurture confidence through structure, creativity and encouragement.

Each session includes:

  • Dance for coordination and physical confidence
  • Drama for imagination and communication
  • Singing for vocal strength and self-expression

All taught in a gentle, organised and age-appropriate way.

We are not about pressure or perfection. We focus on helping each child grow at their own pace, whether they are shy, energetic, sensitive or somewhere in between.

Over time, children develop:

  • Clearer communication
  • Better listening skills
  • Stronger teamwork
  • Greater independence
  • The confidence to be seen and heard

These are skills for life, not just for the stage.

New Saturday morning classes now open in Ilford

Due to growing demand from local families, we are delighted to be launching new Saturday morning classes at Jigsaw Ilford for:

  • 3–4 year olds
  • 5–6 year olds

We know mornings suit many families’ routines, and we are excited to offer more children the chance to find their place to belong.

We continue to run our popular classes on Saturday afternoons for children aged 3 years, right up to 18 years.

A gentle first step

We understand that starting something new can feel big, especially for little ones.

That is why we offer a two-week trial at the beginning of term. It gives children the chance to experience the environment properly and gives parents reassurance that it feels right.

You might be surprised how quickly that first nervous step turns into a confident walk through the door.

Ready to support your child’s confidence?

If you are looking for a consistent, structured and welcoming activity that supports your child’s whole development, we would love to welcome you to Jigsaw Ilford.

Because confidence is not built in a day.
It is built through belonging, consistency and care.

Last year’s Easter Camp was an absolute hit! In just four days, our talented students worked together to rehearse, create and perform a full musical, complete with singing, dancing and acting. The energy, teamwork and confidence shown throughout the week were simply amazing, and the final performance had families beaming with pride.

Alongside rehearsals, our campers also enjoyed a wide range of arts and crafts activities, creative workshops and plenty of fun games. It was a week packed with imagination, laughter and new friendships.

And this year? We’re ready to do it all over again, bigger and better!

What to Expect

Our Easter Camp is designed to give children a brilliant balance of structured rehearsals and creative exploration. Over the four days, students will:

Jigsaw Classes Build Confidence in Children

One of the biggest benefits of our performing arts classes that we see in young children and teenagers is the boost in confidence. Standing up tall, projecting your voice, and performing, even just to a partner or a small group can really help children overcome their shyness and self-doubt.

Through lots of fun and challenging games and activities in drama, singing, and dance, students learn to trust themselves and take creative risks in our nurturing, supportive environment. We champion and celebrate every achievement, whether it’s speaking with volume, testing memory with new choreography, or sharing ideas, it all helps towards building self assurance.

At our weekend performing arts classes in Brockley / Nunhead, we see children grow in confidence week by week. And this new found confidence doesn’t stay in the classroom it carries into school, family time, friendships, and everyday life.

Drama Classes Improve Social Skills and Teamwork

Drama classes are a very powerful tool in supporting a child’s personal development. It is a collaborative art form, making classes ideal for developing strong communication and social skills. In every class, children learn how to share ideas, listen, respond, and work well together as a team.

Children are split into age appropriate groups at Jigsaw Brockley. And for many children at Jigsaw, our down to earth and inclusive activities provide a welcoming space where friendships form naturally. Our fantastic team of teachers work hard to ensure that our performing arts school in Brockley creates a welcoming community where every child feels included and valued.

Benefits of Drama, Singing, and Dance

Children enjoy our combination classes of drama, singing, and dance. And each subject supports different areas of development:

  • Drama builds communication, imagination, and emotional knowledge
  • Singing improves vocal confidence, listening skills, and breath control

Dance enhances coordination, posture, fitness, and spacial awareness

Together, these can really help children become more confident, expressive, and physically active. Combining drama, singing, and dance also keeps classes engaging and fun, supporting different learning styles. You don’t have to be a pro at each subject to enjoy them and gain the benefits of the classes!

Communication and Language Development

Jigsaw Brockley dance, drama and singing classes are excellent for improving communication skills and language development. In class, there are opportunities to practise projecting their voice, and using new vocabulary. Exploring different characters and stories also helps expand vocabulary and understanding of emotion, especially empathy.

For those children who might struggle with confidence in speaking, our classes at Jigsaw Brockley / Nunhead provides a way to practise communication without pressure.

These skills directly benefit children at school, especially with reading aloud, or later down the lines with class presentations, and group discussions.

Creativity and Imagination

Creativity and exploring imaginations plays a vital role in child development. Jigsaw drama classes in Brockley and Nunhead give children the freedom to explore their imagination and think outside the box. Through fun and engaging storytelling, role play, and movement, students learn to think creatively and find solutions to solve problems.

At Jigsaw Performing Arts School Brockley, we always encourage children to offer their ideas, and solutions to problems. We nurture creative development which then helps to support learning across all subjects at school, not just the arts.

Emotional Wellbeing Through Drama

Drama classes give children a healthy outlet for emotional expression. By stepping into different characters and situations, children learn skills in understanding emotional awareness.

Many parents notice that children leave Jigsaw classes feeling happier and more relaxed. The combination of movement, music, and creativity can have an overall positive impact on mental wellbeing and self-esteem.

Physical Benefits of Dance in Performing Arts Classes

Dance is a student favourite here at Jigsaw Brockley. Our teacher choreographs material suited to the students’ learning which contributes to improving their coordination, balance, flexibility, and overall fitness.

Taking part in a group dance class also encourages children to enjoy being active. For children who may not enjoy traditional sports, our dance classes provide an excellent alternative way to stay active.

Stage Set and Scripts Printed – It Is SHOW TERM in Finchley!

Stage set, scripts printed, plans in action, next up… Show term at Jigsaw Finchley!

Stage set, scripts written and a fun Spring Term planned for Jigsaw Finchley. Next up is show term and we are beyond excited to reveal the production we will be working on.

Out of the three terms at Jigsaw Performing Arts Schools, we would have to admit that for most, Show Term is a student favourite! At Jigsaw we believe in providing high quality singing, dance and drama classes that teach skills for life, not just the stage.

We teach these transferable skills in a fun and nurturing way that is designed to support each individual on their journey into exploring the performing arts. Whether they want to become performers in the industry or simply want to connect with new people. The show term at Jigsaw Finchley is a fun way to show friends and family the bravery and accomplishments the students achieved this year.

Did you know…

Our end of term shows at Jigsaw are written by our talented teachers! We put a spin on well known musicals and children’s theatre, creating fun and engaging storylines. This is to ensure every child has their special moment to take centre stage, and we avoid any one ‘lead role’. Our teachers at Jigsaw Finchley write and adapt the script to suit the children as individuals and as a group.

Our students enjoy performing with no pressure to be perfect, only under strict instruction to have fun and try their best! Incorporating material in singing, dance and drama, together we create a unique musical experience enjoyed by an audience of friends, family and supporters at the end of the term.

Jigsaw Finchley are proud to encourage an environment where accepting new goals and set challenges can be done with confidence and stride. Our weekend performing arts classes are a place to belong!

See some recent reviews from our parents!

My daughter has been coming since she was 3.5 and loves it! Her favourite of all her classes. Helped develop her confidence.”

“Our daughter loves her Jigsaw sessions – the teachers are upbeat and energetic, she has made lovely friends, and she is always so proud to take part in the little shows at the end of term!”

“Lovely classes. Staff are excellent. My 5 year old loves it.”

What if my child is too shy to perform?

At Jigsaw, our goals are oriented less around putting on ‘big shows’ and repetitively rehearsing with pressure to perform. We understand and embrace that every child joins Jigsaw for an array of reasons, and many children feel nervous or uncertain when it comes to the performance.

Our classes are designed to build confidence gently, through fun, supportive activities that encourage participation at each child’s own pace. We love nothing more than supporting our students. And we often see that once shy child that did not want to participate, takes centre stage at the next performance. We believe in timing, dedication and creating that welcoming atmosphere for children to grow and learn.

Our shows can range from polished pieces to improvised (safe and fun) chaos. Ultimately, our goal is to nurture their self-belief, whether that means performing on stage or simply feeling more confident in themselves.

How often do the children perform?

At Jigsaw Finchley we run three terms throughout the year. The three terms (Spring, Summer, Autumn) run alongside the school calendar.

There are plenty of opportunities to perform!

PRESENTATION TERM = Perform an open class demonstration.

SHOW TERM = End of term show with costume, lights, stage, props etc.

TECHNIQUE TERM = Take to the stage at the East Barnet Festival every summer.

Fun fact: Jigsaw Finchley have been performing at the East Barnet Festival for over 10 years. Typically singing a melody of musical favourites in the large blue and yellow tent!

What age do the children take part in shows from?

At Jigsaw Finchley, children aged 3 and above are invited to perform to an audience of friends and family at the end of the Presentation and Show Term.

Can parents take part in the class?

All classes at Jigsaw Finchley are drop off sessions. Parents are invited to enjoy their morning knowing their child is happy and in safe hands at Jigsaw. You are more than welcome to wait in the school reception area or in a cosy cafe close by.

The trial classes are also drop off sessions! Our team of teachers are very kind, friendly and expert at settling in nervous new starters. It can sometimes take a few sessions for your child to warm up to the idea of the routine of Jigsaw and being dropped off for the first time, and that’s why we offer a two-week trial. Two classes allow a good opportunity to decide whether Jigsaw is your place to belong!

My child is very shy, will they be okay?

Jigsaw is a place to belong for everyone. At Jigsaw Finchley many children join us to improve their confidence, beat their shyness and improve their social skills. Our classes are perfect for shy children looking to find their voice, express themselves and meet new people. Tailored to suit every child’s needs, our teaching team are fantastic at drawing out each child’s individual talents and allowing them the space to be.

What if my child is outgoing and active?

Outgoing and active children love Jigsaw Finchley, especially the dance classes! Channeling that energy into movement is a perfect way for children to let off steam and express themselves. In our singing, dance and drama classes at Jigsaw Finchley, there are other skills involved like listening or keeping rhythm, and this can help improve focus. A fantastic balance of active fun, and commitment to the subject.

Catching Up with Yazmin: From Jigsaw Student to West End Performer

We’re delighted to share an update on one of our brilliant former students, Yazmin, whose performing arts journey began right here at Jigsaw Performing Arts School in Ilford and has gone on to reach some truly exciting milestones.

During her time at Jigsaw, Yazmin developed a real passion for dance, drama and singing, loved meeting new friends, and thrived on trying out new skills. She often spoke about how Jigsaw helped her build confidence and encouraged her ambition to pursue a career in the performing arts – and she certainly meant it when she said “watch this space!”

Since then, Yazmin has continued to work hard on her training, going on to attend the prestigious Mountview Theatre School, where she further honed her skills as a performer. Her dedication paid off when she was cast in the West End production of Les Misérables.  An incredible achievement and a proud moment for everyone who has followed her journey.

Yazmin is now continuing to shine on stage, currently appearing in panto as Princess Rose in Sleeping Beauty at Nottingham Playhouse. It’s wonderful to see her talent, confidence and love for performing bringing joy to audiences, just as it did all those years ago at Jigsaw.

From a four-year-old taking her first steps in her performing arts class to a professional performer on some of the UK’s most celebrated stages, Yazmin’s story is a fantastic example of where passion, training and belief can lead. We can’t wait to see what she does next.

Yazmin will also be back teaching perfroming arts to our younger students in the New Year.  What a treat!

If you’d like to follow in Yazmin’s footsteps—or simply explore the skills, confidence, and creativity our classes can unlock, we’d love to welcome you. Join us for a two-week trial at Jigsaw Ilford, held at Valentines High School on Saturday afternoons, and see firsthand how our classes help students grow both on and off the stage.
