Jigsaw Classes Build Confidence in Children

One of the biggest benefits of our performing arts classes that we see in young children and teenagers is the boost in confidence. Standing up tall, projecting your voice, and performing, even just to a partner or a small group can really help children overcome their shyness and self-doubt.

Through lots of fun and challenging games and activities in drama, singing, and dance, students learn to trust themselves and take creative risks in our nurturing, supportive environment. We champion and celebrate every achievement, whether it’s speaking with volume, testing memory with new choreography, or sharing ideas, it all helps towards building self assurance.

At our weekend performing arts classes in Brockley / Nunhead, we see children grow in confidence week by week. And this new found confidence doesn’t stay in the classroom it carries into school, family time, friendships, and everyday life.

Drama Classes Improve Social Skills and Teamwork

Drama classes are a very powerful tool in supporting a child’s personal development. It is a collaborative art form, making classes ideal for developing strong communication and social skills. In every class, children learn how to share ideas, listen, respond, and work well together as a team.

Children are split into age appropriate groups at Jigsaw Brockley. And for many children at Jigsaw, our down to earth and inclusive activities provide a welcoming space where friendships form naturally. Our fantastic team of teachers work hard to ensure that our performing arts school in Brockley creates a welcoming community where every child feels included and valued.

Benefits of Drama, Singing, and Dance

Children enjoy our combination classes of drama, singing, and dance. And each subject supports different areas of development:

  • Drama builds communication, imagination, and emotional knowledge
  • Singing improves vocal confidence, listening skills, and breath control

Dance enhances coordination, posture, fitness, and spacial awareness

Together, these can really help children become more confident, expressive, and physically active. Combining drama, singing, and dance also keeps classes engaging and fun, supporting different learning styles. You don’t have to be a pro at each subject to enjoy them and gain the benefits of the classes!

Communication and Language Development

Jigsaw Brockley dance, drama and singing classes are excellent for improving communication skills and language development. In class, there are opportunities to practise projecting their voice, and using new vocabulary. Exploring different characters and stories also helps expand vocabulary and understanding of emotion, especially empathy.

For those children who might struggle with confidence in speaking, our classes at Jigsaw Brockley / Nunhead provides a way to practise communication without pressure.

These skills directly benefit children at school, especially with reading aloud, or later down the lines with class presentations, and group discussions.

Creativity and Imagination

Creativity and exploring imaginations plays a vital role in child development. Jigsaw drama classes in Brockley and Nunhead give children the freedom to explore their imagination and think outside the box. Through fun and engaging storytelling, role play, and movement, students learn to think creatively and find solutions to solve problems.

At Jigsaw Performing Arts School Brockley, we always encourage children to offer their ideas, and solutions to problems. We nurture creative development which then helps to support learning across all subjects at school, not just the arts.

Emotional Wellbeing Through Drama

Drama classes give children a healthy outlet for emotional expression. By stepping into different characters and situations, children learn skills in understanding emotional awareness.

Many parents notice that children leave Jigsaw classes feeling happier and more relaxed. The combination of movement, music, and creativity can have an overall positive impact on mental wellbeing and self-esteem.

Physical Benefits of Dance in Performing Arts Classes

Dance is a student favourite here at Jigsaw Brockley. Our teacher choreographs material suited to the students’ learning which contributes to improving their coordination, balance, flexibility, and overall fitness.

Taking part in a group dance class also encourages children to enjoy being active. For children who may not enjoy traditional sports, our dance classes provide an excellent alternative way to stay active.

Stage Set and Scripts Printed – It Is SHOW TERM in Finchley!

Stage set, scripts printed, plans in action, next up… Show term at Jigsaw Finchley!

Stage set, scripts written and a fun Spring Term planned for Jigsaw Finchley. Next up is show term and we are beyond excited to reveal the production we will be working on.

Out of the three terms at Jigsaw Performing Arts Schools, we would have to admit that for most, Show Term is a student favourite! At Jigsaw we believe in providing high quality singing, dance and drama classes that teach skills for life, not just the stage.

We teach these transferable skills in a fun and nurturing way that is designed to support each individual on their journey into exploring the performing arts. Whether they want to become performers in the industry or simply want to connect with new people. The show term at Jigsaw Finchley is a fun way to show friends and family the bravery and accomplishments the students achieved this year.

Did you know…

Our end of term shows at Jigsaw are written by our talented teachers! We put a spin on well known musicals and children’s theatre, creating fun and engaging storylines. This is to ensure every child has their special moment to take centre stage, and we avoid any one ‘lead role’. Our teachers at Jigsaw Finchley write and adapt the script to suit the children as individuals and as a group.

Our students enjoy performing with no pressure to be perfect, only under strict instruction to have fun and try their best! Incorporating material in singing, dance and drama, together we create a unique musical experience enjoyed by an audience of friends, family and supporters at the end of the term.

Jigsaw Finchley are proud to encourage an environment where accepting new goals and set challenges can be done with confidence and stride. Our weekend performing arts classes are a place to belong!

See some recent reviews from our parents!

My daughter has been coming since she was 3.5 and loves it! Her favourite of all her classes. Helped develop her confidence.”

“Our daughter loves her Jigsaw sessions – the teachers are upbeat and energetic, she has made lovely friends, and she is always so proud to take part in the little shows at the end of term!”

“Lovely classes. Staff are excellent. My 5 year old loves it.”

What if my child is too shy to perform?

At Jigsaw, our goals are oriented less around putting on ‘big shows’ and repetitively rehearsing with pressure to perform. We understand and embrace that every child joins Jigsaw for an array of reasons, and many children feel nervous or uncertain when it comes to the performance.

Our classes are designed to build confidence gently, through fun, supportive activities that encourage participation at each child’s own pace. We love nothing more than supporting our students. And we often see that once shy child that did not want to participate, takes centre stage at the next performance. We believe in timing, dedication and creating that welcoming atmosphere for children to grow and learn.

Our shows can range from polished pieces to improvised (safe and fun) chaos. Ultimately, our goal is to nurture their self-belief, whether that means performing on stage or simply feeling more confident in themselves.

How often do the children perform?

At Jigsaw Finchley we run three terms throughout the year. The three terms (Spring, Summer, Autumn) run alongside the school calendar.

There are plenty of opportunities to perform!

PRESENTATION TERM = Perform an open class demonstration.

SHOW TERM = End of term show with costume, lights, stage, props etc.

TECHNIQUE TERM = Take to the stage at the East Barnet Festival every summer.

Fun fact: Jigsaw Finchley have been performing at the East Barnet Festival for over 10 years. Typically singing a melody of musical favourites in the large blue and yellow tent!

What age do the children take part in shows from?

At Jigsaw Finchley, children aged 3 and above are invited to perform to an audience of friends and family at the end of the Presentation and Show Term.

Can parents take part in the class?

All classes at Jigsaw Finchley are drop off sessions. Parents are invited to enjoy their morning knowing their child is happy and in safe hands at Jigsaw. You are more than welcome to wait in the school reception area or in a cosy cafe close by.

The trial classes are also drop off sessions! Our team of teachers are very kind, friendly and expert at settling in nervous new starters. It can sometimes take a few sessions for your child to warm up to the idea of the routine of Jigsaw and being dropped off for the first time, and that’s why we offer a two-week trial. Two classes allow a good opportunity to decide whether Jigsaw is your place to belong!

My child is very shy, will they be okay?

Jigsaw is a place to belong for everyone. At Jigsaw Finchley many children join us to improve their confidence, beat their shyness and improve their social skills. Our classes are perfect for shy children looking to find their voice, express themselves and meet new people. Tailored to suit every child’s needs, our teaching team are fantastic at drawing out each child’s individual talents and allowing them the space to be.

What if my child is outgoing and active?

Outgoing and active children love Jigsaw Finchley, especially the dance classes! Channeling that energy into movement is a perfect way for children to let off steam and express themselves. In our singing, dance and drama classes at Jigsaw Finchley, there are other skills involved like listening or keeping rhythm, and this can help improve focus. A fantastic balance of active fun, and commitment to the subject.

Dance, Singing and Drama Classes

Children across our Jigsaw Performing Arts Schools take part in fun and interactive Dance, Singing and Drama Classes each weekend. Every class is designed to ignite imaginations, boost confidence and help friendships form. Our teachers tailor the classes to suit each child’s needs and are expert at recognising and bringing out every child’s unique talents.

Dance classes are a fantastic way to improve physical and mental wellbeing. Dancing is also great for testing memory skills, mobility and flexibility too!

Singing encourages a sense of community, and helps bring us together! Singing classes can introduce new vocabulary to children, as well as improving rhythm, tone and diction!

Drama classes dramatically (excuse the pun!) shift a child’s confidence as they take on the challenge of playing a new character. This can also help with critical thinking skills, understanding empathy and public speaking in front of an audience. Which can be very helpful in life across many areas!

In fact, every lesson at Jigsaw can help shape the minds of our growing and developing children. The transferable skills that are taught through the mediums of dance, singing and drama are second to none. And what’s more, the children explore these new skills through engaging and interactive activities so it doesn’t feel like a typical lesson in the classroom!

Nicola Lander looks back on 30 years of Jigsaw Performing Arts

So here we are today, 30 years on, and I can’t quite believe it!

This milestone, combined with having had some unexpected time to reflect, has given me the chance to look back on the journey, where it began, what I’ve learned, and what has carried me through.

Before I talk about Jigsaw, I want to go back one step further, to where my passion and purpose began.

I was once that shy little girl, hiding behind my mum’s skirt. My primary school teacher described me as both an introvert/extrovert, and when I found performing arts, everything changed. It gave me a character to step into, a place to grow my confidence, and a safe way to express myself. It gave me what we promise it can give our students at Jigsaw today.

As a teenager in Bristol, drama school was my dream but it felt like something other people did. People from London, not me. But I had Ali, my lovely weekend drama teacher who believed in me. She prepared me for auditions, encouraged me, and to my amazement, I got a place at Mountview.

From that moment, two lessons were planted deep within me:

1. The incredible power of performing arts.

2. The life-changing impact of someone believing in you.

Those two beliefs became the foundations of Jigsaw. They’ve carried me through three decades, from nurturing students, to later supporting franchisees, giving others the belief and opportunity to run their own business. And I’ll be honest: there were times I had to cling tightly to those beliefs, especially through the challenges. And there have been more than a few challenging moments in the last thirty years. But again and again, they’ve pulled me forward.

Because the truth is, it’s not just the highlights, though there have been some wonderful ones, like Jigsaw Youth Theatre Company performing on the stage of the Olivier. I cried so many proud tears that night. But it’s also the quieter moments, the times I knew something had to change.

Together, we’ve always risen to challenges with a solution focused mindset, making Jigsaw not just a workplace, but a place to belong.

After 16 years, we had 22 schools running from head office. On paper, it looked successful. But it didn’t feel right anymore. We couldn’t give the same level of personal service. That’s when I made the terrifying decision to go against our USP, “Jigsaw does not franchise”, and take the leap into franchising.

I was absolutely terrified. What if nobody wanted one? But someone did. And others followed. That’s when I learned: true growth happens when you step to the edge of your comfort zone, not miles outside it, just to the edge. That’s where you find progress.

Looking back, Jigsaw has grown not from one big leap, but from consistency:

· Taking small steps every day.
· Never standing still, always evolving.
· Staying aligned with my values.
· Keeping purpose at the heart of everything.
· Self awareness – know what you are good at and what you need help with.
· And treating every challenge as an opportunity to learn.

That’s what has brought us here today, 30 years later, with so many students, teachers, and franchisees carrying this vision forward.

So as we celebrate 30 years, let’s not just look back, let’s also look forward with courage. Let’s remember why we began, let’s hold onto our values, and let’s keep stepping to the edge of our comfort zones.

Because if the last 30 years have taught me anything, it’s this: with passion, purpose, and belief, we can achieve far more than we ever imagined.

Spotlight on Amy – Performing Arts Teacher!

Hi! I’m Amy, and I am thrilled to be part of the amazing Jigsaw team! I spend my Saturdays at both Jigsaw Watford and Jigsaw Hendon teaching performing arts to 3-18 year olds! Helping them grow in confidence and develop skills!

How did you first get into performing arts?

I started singing and dancing when I was very young! And I first started dance classes  when I was three years old. My love for musical theatre and performing came in Year 8 at school, when I joined the choir and started to take part in the school musicals!

What do you enjoy most about teaching at Jigsaw?

My favourite part is watching the children have fun every single week! Also, seeing the end result of what we’ve worked on together for the whole term. Watching every single one of them shine on stage in the shows we create is such a rewarding experience!

What do you enjoy outside of Jigsaw and performing?

I love going to the theatre, spending time with my family and friends and line dancing!!

What is your favourite role you’ve played and what is your dream role?

My favourite show I’ve been in is my most recent role, when I played Sue Snell in Carrie! My dream role is definitely Reno Sweeney from Anything Goes.

What advice would you give to children wanting to start performing arts?

Go for it! Even if it feels scary at first, we’ll show you how fun it really is! If you love singing, dance, or drama, there’s a place for everybody at Jigsaw!

Come and sign up for a two-week trial today!

Spotlight on Sophie! – Performing Arts Teacher at Bushey!

Hey! My name is Sophie, and I am thrilled to be part of the amazing Jigsaw team! I spend my Sunday mornings at Jigsaw Bushey teaching performing arts to the 3–6-year-olds! Helping them grow in confidence and develop skills!

How did you first get into performing arts?

I loved singing and dancing when I was very little, I was always dancing around the house and doing karaoke with my siblings! I decided to join a local performing arts school and absolutely loved it from day one! I loved how much performing gave me confidence and also helped me make new friends!

What do you enjoy most about teaching at Jigsaw?

The thing I love most about Jigsaw is seeing everyone’s smiley faces! I have missed all those cheeky smiles this summer, I absolutely can’t wait to be back singing and dancing with everyone soon!!

What do you enjoy outside of Jigsaw and performing?

I love going to the theatre, playing games and quizzes with my family, and going to the cinema with friends!!

What is your favourite role you’ve played and what is your dream role?

My favourite show I’ve been in is probably when I played Annie in ‘Annie’ One of my dream roles is Sophie in Mamma Mia, as I love ABBA!

What advice would you give to children wanting to start performing arts?

The more you put into it, the more you get out of it! So give everything a go, and don’t be scared to make mistakes!! If you love singing, dance, or drama, there’s a place for everybody at Jigsaw!

Come and sign up for a two-week trial today!

Spotlight on Bree! – Performing Arts Teacher Harpenden!

Hi! I’m Bree, and I spend my Sunday mornings at Jigsaw Harpenden teaching performing arts to the 3–6-year-olds! Helping them grow in confidence and develop skills!

What are you most looking forward to about show term?

The thing I’m most excited about for show term is just to continue to see these children grow in confidence as much as they have already!  It’s going to be so special watching them go from learning their lines and dances to then standing on stage in front of an audience! It’s going to be such a celebration and I’m so excited!

What other skills has performing arts given you?

Definitely confidence, in terms of speaking and presenting and just being myself. It’s taught me resilience, patience, and also to work as part of a team. Being able to lead is great, but being a part of that team is so so important. I think it’s a massive skill that all of us can really benefit from and help you in everyday life!

What is your favourite musical and dream role?

It has to be Wicked! I love the music, the moral of the story, the dancing, the characters, everything! It’s just so magical. I think it’s beautiful and my dream role is definitely Glinda! It’s been a dream world of mine since I was a little girl!

How imaginative my students are, they’re just so fearless! I just think it’s so gorgeous to see how their energy and enthusiasm is so infectious.
