SPOTLIGHT ON MADDIE

Name – Maddie

Where are you from? – Buckhurst Hill, Essex

When did you start working at Jigsaw? – In September 2022

Which Jigsaw schools do you and have you worked in? – The first Jigsaw school I worked at, and where I still currently work, is Jigsaw Potters Bar. I have also worked and covered at Jigsaw Barnet and Jigsaw High Barnet.

What subject do you teach? – Originally, when I joined Jigsaw, I started as a singing teacher and gradually moved into teaching dance as well. Now I am Jigsaw Potters Bar’s dance teacher. However, when covering at other schools, I teach across all subjects.

Where did you train? – I attended Chickenshed Theatre Company, where I first began in their Youth Theatre as a child. From there, I progressed onto their Performing Arts BTEC, then completed a Foundation Degree, begore graduating in 2023 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Inclusive Performing Arts.

After this, I trained to become a secondary school teacher and achieved my QTS (Qualified Teacher Status). I completed my training between 2023-2025 and now teach full-time during the week, alongside continuing to teach at Jigsaw on weekends.

What did you do before Jigsaw? Have you had any jobs that you loved/hated? –Before working at Jigsaw, I was a full-time student while also teaching Performing Arts at weekends for other companies. Be I have been teaching performing arts classes since the age of 15. The year before starting that, I worked in an organic café as well as helping out at weekends at my cousin’s hair salon.

Out of all jobs I have had, I really didn’t enjoy working in the café. I found it difficult because it didn’t allow me to be creative or fully myself. I’ve always been someone who wants to dance around, sing and perform, and that just wasn’t possible there. Working within Performing Arts feels much more natural to me.

What’s your greatest career achievement?
One of my greatest achievements has been completing my degree and teacher training while continuing to work within Performing Arts. I’m proud that I’ve been able to turn something I’ve loved since childhood into a full-time career. Helping others find a way to show their talent is something I will forever love to do and love to support.

As well as this, I am fluent in BSL (British Sign Language) and have been using it from a young age. I have now completed up to Level 4 in my qualifications and have started teaching BSL to a variety of age groups. One of my proudest experiences was signing throughout a two-hour performance whilst also dancing, singing and moving in character around the stage. Since then, I’ve also begun teaching actors how to incorporate BSL into performances, which has been incredibly rewarding.

What do you enjoy the most at Jigsaw?
The thing I enjoy most at Jigsaw is the energy and creativity of the students. I love watching children grow in confidence, develop their skills and become more comfortable expressing themselves. Every week is different, and it’s such a positive environment to work in. I also look forward to seeing my team every week, we’re all so close and I consider them all good friends of mine.

What has been your favourite moment at Jigsaw?
My favourite moments at Jigsaw are always the performances and showcases. Seeing students perform confidently on stage after weeks of rehearsals is incredibly rewarding. I especially love those moments where a student who started off as shy suddenly comes burst out of their shell during a performance. It’s even the smaller moments, for example when a students tells me that their flexibility has improved because they have been using the correct stretching techniques we’ve worked on in class, or when they struggle with a particular move, go home and practice, then come back the following week excited to show me they can finally do it. It’s all the little moments.

What’s your favourite show? – This is such a difficult question, because I am so indecisive. I would have to say that ONE of my favourite West End performances would have to be Billy Elliot. The movement, the music, the emotion… I loved it all! That’s a performance I HAVE to watch again! One of my favourite Broadway performances would definitely be Chicago. I was blown away! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time and left the theatre with my face hurting from smiling too much!

What would be the most rewarding role or show for you to do? – I think I would say I’ve already had an incredibly rewarding role. In a previous answer, I mentioned being the sign language lead within a performance. It was my favourite role to date and my cousin, who is deaf, came to watch the show and afterwards told me that I was a natural and that he was proud to see me using and incorporating BSL into a performance. That moment meant so much to me and is something I’ll always remember.

If I were to choose a dream role for the future, I would probably say Elphaba in Wicked. Ever since I was young, my family have always said, “She’ll be Elphaba in the West End one day,” and I would absolutely love to make that dream come true.

Who is your favourite actor/actress? Why? – If we’re talking about stage performers, I would definitely say Idina Menzel and Cynthia Erivo (two incredible Elphabas). Their voices are unbelievable, and their range and individual performance styles are everything. I would absolutely love the opportunity to meet and sing with Cynthia Erivo one day!

If we’re talking about screen actors, I would have to say Viola Davis. She is such a powerful actor and always brings such raw, believable emotion to every role she plays.

Do you have a favourite song? – It would have to be Bonkers by Dizzee Rascal. My auntie introduced me to this song when I was younger, and I don’t think I’ve ever connected with a song so much before. Yes, I’m a bit bonkers but I don’t mind that at all! This song just instantly boosts my energy and puts me in a good mood.

If you had a film of your life who would play you? – I have no idea. Maybe, a blonde version of Emma Stone. She’s fun, she’s quirky and could definitely pull off my energy.

There is nothing quite like seeing a student step into a leading role and shine on stage, and everyone at Jigsaw Barnet is incredibly proud of Aren, who will be playing Charlie in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at The Southgate Theatre.

Based on Roald Dahl’s much-loved story, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has delighted audiences around the world through stage and screen adaptations. For Aren, taking on the role of Charlie Bucket is an exciting milestone and a wonderful example of how confidence, commitment and creativity can grow through performing arts.

A role full of heart

Charlie is one of theatre’s most loved young characters. Kind, hopeful and full of imagination, he reminds audiences that determination and staying true to yourself matter most. Playing such an iconic role takes focus, resilience and confidence, and Aren is embracing every part of the challenge.

After lots of planning behind the scenes, we are so excited to finally share some wonderful news with our Jigsaw Sutton families.

From September, we will be opening a brand new Saturday morning branch at Sutton Grammar School.

First of all, we want to reassure our existing families that nothing is changing with our brilliant Saturday afternoon classes at Harris Academy Sutton. Our afternoon school will continue exactly as it always has, with the same fantastic teaching team, the same high-quality classes and the same warm, welcoming atmosphere that families know and trust.

This new branch is simply an exciting next step for Jigsaw Sutton and a chance to welcome even more local children into our community.

A venue we already know and love

One of the reasons we feel so excited about Sutton Grammar School is because this is not completely new territory for us.

Matilda magic comes to Jigsaw Harpenden

Our Summer term at Jigsaw Harpenden began with an unforgettable Matilda West End workshop led by former Matilda cast member Emily Robins. From singing “When I Grow Up” to learning original choreography from “Revolting Children”, our students experienced the magic of the West End in a fun and confidence-building environment.

Our wonderfully “Revolting Children” were put through their paces by the fantastic Emily Robins, who starred as Lavender and several other roles in the West End production of Matilda the Musical. It was an unforgettable experience for our Main School students, who embraced every moment with energy, enthusiasm and huge smiles.

From the moment the workshop began, the room was buzzing with excitement as students stepped into the world of Matilda through singing, dance and performance.

Learning from a real West End performer

Having the opportunity to work with a professional West End performer is always such a special experience for our students.

Emily shared her knowledge, experience and passion for performing arts throughout the workshop, encouraging students to throw themselves into the choreography, storytelling and music while building confidence along the way.

Students learned and performed the beautiful song “When I Grow Up” before taking on some of the original choreography from the iconic number “Revolting Children”. There was plenty of determination, teamwork and laughter as everyone gave it their all.

Experiences like this help children see what is possible through performing arts while still keeping the focus on creativity, enjoyment and personal growth.

Our Main School students worked so hard throughout the session and we are incredibly proud of every single one of them for embracing the challenge with such positivity and enthusiasm.

K-pop Heroes Holiday Camp in Brockley for children aged 3-5 and 5-16: Summer 2026

This summer, Jigsaw Performing Arts Brockley is bringing children an exciting K-pop Heroes holiday camp! A Summer Camp that gives children the chance to create original characters, build exciting storylines and perform in a fun mini-show at the end of the week.

Alongside high-energy performing arts sessions, children will enjoy games, creativity, arts and crafts, and plenty of confidence-building moments in a supportive environment, inspired with the energy, music and creativity of K-pop. From bold choreography and fun storytelling, it’s a world that inspires imaginations and encourages self-expression.

For children aged 3-5 and 5-16

3-5 years: 9:30am – 11:30am, two hour workshop with a short break in between, and performance on Friday 31st at 11:00am

5-16 years: 9:00am – 3:30pm (free wraparound care available from 8:30am and until 4:00pm) and performance on Friday 31st at 3:00pm

What we are doing this term at Jigsaw Hemel Hempstead

This term at Jigsaw Hemel Hempstead is our much-loved Technique Term, giving students across all age groups the opportunity to develop new skills, grow in confidence and try exciting new experiences in a safe and supportive environment.

Technique Term gives children the chance to explore different styles, strengthen their performing arts skills and most importantly, enjoy the process of learning and growing at their own pace.

At the end of Technique term parents recieve a written report keeping them update with their childs progressing and learning and Jiigsaw!

Exploring emotions through performing arts in our Performing Art classes

For our 3–4 and 5–6 year olds, this term’s work is centred around emotions and self-expression.

Our youngest students are exploring emotions through the wonderful story of The Colour Monster, while our 5–6 year olds are taking inspiration from Inside Out. Throughout the term, children will explore different feelings through singing, dance and drama, with each emotion linked to a colour theme.

We have started with our yellow and happy theme, where students have been:

Singing upbeat songs
Learning themed dances
Going on imaginative drama adventures
Talking about what makes them feel happy
Using their own ideas and experiences in class

These sessions are about so much more than performance skills. Through creative play and structured activities, children are developing communication, emotional awareness and confidence in a way that feels fun, gentle and engaging.

At Jigsaw, we know every child expresses themselves differently, and Technique Term gives us a lovely opportunity to encourage creativity and conversation in an age-appropriate way.

Our popular bring a parent week for 3-4 years & 5-6 years classes

Later in the term, we’ll also be welcoming families into the classroom for our special Bring a Parent Week for our 3-6 years sessions.

This is always a highlight for our students, who love showing their grown-ups what they’ve been learning in class.

Parents will have the opportunity to:

Join in with singing and dancing
Take part in drama games and adventures
Experience the structure of a Jigsaw class first-hand
Share special memories with their child

These sessions are always full of smiles, laughter and proud moments, and they give families a wonderful insight into how confidence grows week by week at Jigsaw.

A packed and exciting term for Main School students

Our Main School students have an incredibly exciting term ahead, packed with projects, workshops and opportunities to explore different areas of performing arts.

We are starting the term with our Musical Theatre Project themed around Spongebob The Musical. Students are learning songs, choreography and scenes from the production within their age groups, working together to bring the material to life.

At the end of the project, students will perform what they have learned to each other, building performance confidence in a supportive and encouraging environment.

Alongside the musical theatre project, students will also take part in:

Celebrating individuality through our talent show

Another favourite part of the term is our Jigsaw Talent Show.

This is a brilliant opportunity for students to showcase their unique talents and interests in a relaxed and supportive environment. Whether they choose to sing, dance, perform comedy, play an instrument or share another special skill, the focus is always on encouragement, creativity and confidence.

At Jigsaw, we love celebrating every child’s individuality and giving them opportunities to feel proud of themselves.

Finishing the term with a West End Workshop

To round off the term, we are incredibly excited to welcome industry professionals for a special West End Workshop.

Students will learn choreography, singing and scenes inspired by a West End production, giving them valuable insight into the world of professional performance while continuing to build confidence and skills in a fun and accessible way.

Experiences like this help students see the many possibilities within performing arts while still keeping the focus on enjoyment, creativity and personal growth.
